When were quarks discovered?

In 1968, scientists working on the SLAC-MIT (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center–Massachusetts Institute of Technology) experiment located in California smashed electrons onto protons or neutrons. The electrons bounced back in a different direction than they were expecting indicating that the protons and neutrons were made of smaller particles. You can determine the shapes of unknown particles in the game Shape Sleuth.
